SELFDENIAL AND READINESS TO MIX WITH NATIVES IN THE BEAR FRUIT.

On the outskirts of San Juan in a section
called Puerta de Tierra there formerly stood a little frame church (3O
feet by 6O) with a three-room bungalow as rectory. It was the parish
church for about 17,000 people, many of whom lived in shacks made of
rough boards and soap boxes. Owing to the extreme poverty of the people,
the squalor of their surroundings, and their utter indifference in
matters of religion, no priest was ambitious to be pastor of Puerta de
Tierra. With a full knowledge of conditions or Father Provincial
accepted the foundation as a "sacrifice of atonement . For two years one
Redemptorist labored alone preparing the way for his confreres. A little
later the bungalow rectory and the dilapidated church were replaced by
an upto-date parochial plant including a beautiful church, monastery,
school and convent.
Under the direction of the School Sisters of Notre Dame the school was
opened September 27, 1915. Five hundred and sixty children, representing
all shades and types from the Spanish blonde to the darkest African
appeared on the first day. From the very beginning the course of study
prescribed by the Department of Education for the public schools of the
Island was followed. In March 1919 the school received its first
certificate of accreditation. This entitled the pupils to enter the
public high schools without further examination. The number of pupils
has gone on increasing steadily until the present year when it reached
852. Since the opening of the school children have made their First Holy
Communion. Besides the beautiful concrete building of 18 classrooms with
ample and suitable equipment there are two little frame buildings in the
swamp districts, attended by two hundred children and supported by a
group of telephone girls of Boston.
A SERMON OF GOOD WORKS
To the relief work of the Pastor of Puerta de Tierra, his assistants,
and the Sisters during the 1916 epidemic and later on during the war, is
due the high esteem in which the Redemptorists are held in San Juan.
Just as during the earthquake the Redemptorist Rectory in Mayaguez was
turned into a base-hospital for the victims, so also after the 1920 fire
in Puerta de Tierra the school was made the haven of refuge for the
stricken sufferers. Over 60 persons lived in the building until other
lodgings were secured. Then was preached our most powerful sermon on the
corporal works of mercy, "clothing the naked, feeding the hungry,
harboring the homeless."
Two other works in which the parish of Puerta de Tierra has succeeded
are the organization of a splendid choir which makes divine service so
attractive in the church and the Apostolate of the press, the
publication of the Monthly Messenger, which carries Christ´s teachings
into the home.

ABNEGACIÓN Y DISPONIBILIDAD PARA COMPARTIR CON NATIVOS .

En las afueras de San Juan, en una sección llamada Puerta de Tierra,
antiguamente había una pequeña iglesia de armazón (30 pies por 60) con
una cabaña de tres habitaciones como rectoría. Era la iglesia parroquial
para unas 17.000 personas, muchas de las cuales vivían en chozas hechas
de tablas rústicas y cajones de jabón. Debido a la extrema pobreza del
pueblo, la miseria de su entorno y su absoluta indiferencia en materia
de religión, ningún sacerdote ambicionaba ser párroco de Puerta de
Tierra. Con pleno conocimiento de las condiciones el Padre Provincial
aceptó la fundación como un "sacrificio de expiación". Durante dos años
un redentorista trabajó solo, preparando el camino para sus cofrades. Un
poco más tarde, la casa parroquial y la iglesia ruinosa fueron
reemplazadas por una moderno planta parroquial que incluye una hermosa
iglesia, monasterio, colegio y convento.
Bajo la dirección de las Hermanas de la Escuela de Notre Dame, la
escuela se inauguró el 27 de septiembre de 1915. El primer día
aparecieron quinientos sesenta niños, que representaban todos los tonos
y tipos, desde la rubia española hasta la africana más oscura. Desde el
principio se siguió el curso de estudios prescrito por el Departamento
de Educación para las escuelas públicas de la Isla. En marzo de 1919, la
escuela recibió su primer certificado de acreditación. Esto dio derecho
a los alumnos a ingresar a las escuelas secundarias públicas sin más
exámenes. El número de alumnos ha ido aumentando de manera constante
hasta el presente año cuando llega a 852. Desde la apertura del colegio,
los niños han hecho su Primera Comunión. Además del hermoso edificio de
concreto de 18 aulas con equipo amplio y adecuado, hay dos
pequeños edificios de maderan en los distritos pantanosos, atendidos por
doscientos niños y apoyados por un grupo de telefonistas de Boston.
UN SERMÓN DE BUENAS OBRAS
A la labor de socorro del Pastor de Puerta de Tierra, sus asistentes y
las Hermanas durante la epidemia de 1916 y más tarde durante la guerra,
se debe la alta estima en que se tiene a los Redentoristas en San Juan.
Así como durante el terremoto la Rectoría Redentorista de Mayagüez se
convirtió en un hospital base para las víctimas, así también después del
incendio de 1920 en Puerta de Tierra la escuela se convirtió en refugio
de los heridos. Más de 60 personas vivieron en el edificio hasta que se
aseguraron otros alojamientos. Luego se predicó nuestro sermón más
poderoso sobre las obras corporales de misericordia, "vestir al desnudo,
alimentar al hambriento, albergar al desamparado".
Otras dos obras en las que ha triunfado la parroquia de Puerta de Tierra
son la organización de un espléndido coro que hace tan atractivo el
servicio divino en la iglesia y el Apostolado de la prensa, la
publicación del Mensajero Mensual, que lleva las enseñanzas de Cristo a
la casa.
